Movie/media suggestions

If you have some media you'd like to review here, feel free to leave a comment of it in the comment box.

  1. It's really hard to leave any suggestions because I don't know what kind of movies it is that you want: classics? unknown films? do they have to have a lot of "value"?

If we're talking about films from the past 10 years then i'd suggest
    - Trainspotting (!)
    - Moulin Rouge (ok, i know it's pretty much a "girl film"
    - Pulp Fiction (shame on you if you haven't seen it)
    - Pahat Pojat (the best finnish film i've seen)

But as i already said it would be easier to suggest films if i knew at all what kind it is that you want so maybe you could give a couple of examples first? :)

  2. Movies from every century are welcomed. I think that we should not focus on classics, f.ex the Pulp Fiction you mentioned, because most of us have propably viewed them, and they are all, umm, "puhki kaluttuja".

And what comes to unknown and indie films, they are welcomed too, if they have some "value", or differ from the mainstream. A film that has "value" would be also good, because it's more fun to review something that actually has some depth in it.

Of course, we can always argue whether a movie has value or not, but that's a different thing. :)

Long story short, Legally Blonde and Twilight are not allowed. :p

Edit: Of course, this is only my opinion. If you agree or not, it'd be helpful if you commented here too.

  3. Some suggestions:
    -Requiem for a dream
    -Memento
    -Two legged horse

They are at least interesting. The last one is directed by a 17 years old girl from Iran... If you want to watch movies that leave your mouths open later on that would be a good choice.

  4. Hi and congrats on your venture!
Are you reviewing films currently showing in theatres? I'd like to hear your views on Inlourious Basterds.

  5. Hi, and sorry about the delay in answering Tiia and Tuuli-Anna.

To Tuuli-Anna: As we can view only relatively few films in our club (we are supposed to review other media too), I'd like the films we view to be "more different" than the two first ones you mentioned (It's really hard to explain, so I won't try to do it now). I am not arguing that they are not good films because they are, but I don't see them fitting to the purpose of this club (as I view it).

The Two-legged horse (Asbe du-pa, I suppose) seems interesting, and I've heard compliments for it. The only problem is that I cannot seem to find it anywhere (Helmet, makuuni, filmtown etc.)

To Tiia: We have not discussed much about viewing films in theaters. I think that not everyone are willing to pay for the ticket, and others have already seen it, so viewing it at this point would propably be in vain. It was an excellent movie, but I still don't see it as fitting for our club as I would like the films to be.

As I said, a few of us have already viewed the Inglorious Basterds, so you can ask their opinion about it. I'm going to write a review of it in Finnish to a different site, as soon as I have the time to do it.

These are only my opinions of course, and if an majority wants to watch a certain movie, we'll of course view it. I think suggestions should be discussed as we gather in our club, so we get to know what others think too.

The next time we are propably going to view a classic: Un chien andalou by Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí. Note that the movie lasts only for 16 minutes, if you have other short films that you'd like to view at the same time, inform me.

  7. I have a suggestion concerning our disagreements with having music in our meetings. A good compromise would be if we took music videos and analyzed them. First of all, they are very effective and popular media and on the other hand there are many different kinds of them. We would probably find many interesting and deep pieces. And we could kind of include both movies and music :)

  8. Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure if you were there when I said it, but however the majority wasn't there, so I'll repeat it. Analysing music videos is a fine suggestion, and I had given it though a while ago. I then came up with the idea of picking songs&videos from musicals to analyse in our meetings, and I think it is a rather good idea, isn't it?

And what comes to the music, we agreed that each of us gets to bring one song later on to our meeting. I'm running out of time, so more information on the next email.

    Cheers.
