This time each of us is going to pick the song they liked the most on Friday, and write something about it here.
And the songs were (in this order):
Regina Spektor: Carbon monoxide
Markoolio: Låt mig få sova
Windmill: Racing
Owl City: Fireflies
Dream Theater: Panic attack
Miyavi: Princess of insomnia
Midnight Oil: Beds are burning
Revolution Void: Total sensory deprivation
Cas Hours: about 1,5h
No club activity during the test week.

Out of the new songs on friday, my favourite was Panic Attack by Dream Theatre.
ReplyDeleteCompared to any of the other new ones to me, it was the only one with 'charisma' to it. Even though it was a bit all over the place, it worked. Beyond all of the mess, there is a rhythm to the song and the instruments work together. There is a lot of change to the beat and pattern, which make it a difficult song to perform, but result in a dynamic piece. Personally, I like songs with electir guitar parts, and this plays a role in how the song has the 'charsima' to it.
The down side was the fact that it was too much of a mess in places; it could have been kept together better. Also, the vocals weren't as could as they could have been. It seemed they were trying to make a scene behind everything, but failed in doing so.
Conclusively, I can't help saying that if Enter Sandman by Metallica would have been on the list, it would have taken a clear win...
Hello dudes!
ReplyDeleteI’m having some severe difficulties on deciding my favorite song. Thank god Enter Sandman was not provided by Spotify. No offence Rasmus or Mikael and I hope no offence taken. What a worn out song. Metallica is all right but still –come on!
I agree with Mikael’s post with the part concerning Panic Attack. (= Wonder why? But I can’t vote for it. This is so hard.
After concerning all the pros and cons my vote for the best song goes to Leonard Cohen’s: Avalanche. The reason is that the lyrics were interesting with a poem like structure. The acoustic guitar did its trick, sounding like a flowing river and his voice was low and “käheä” harsh (is that the word?). All in all it captured my attention and I really felt something. The other songs weren’t bad. Avalanche at this moment feels the best, that’s all.
Oh, to be able to write about my own song!
ReplyDeleteIt kind of surprised me that I had heard 5 out of the 8 songs (excluding mine). I hoped that more songs unknown to me would have been introduced, but I guess that I still can get a grip of your music tastes. It was interesting trying to guess what kind of a song everyone would play. But let’s cut to the cake.
I was going to pick Fireflies, but then decided to write about Panic attack.
It was the easiest song for me to pick, because I listen to Dream Theater regularly. I think it could be hard for someone to digest, because it is no easy-listen-song. It’s hard to write about this song because Mikael said it quite well, but I’ll try to say something. I do not agree with the ‘charisma’ part of Mikael’s post, because I believe that most of the songs had some charisma in them, but I do feel that Panic attack had certain attitude in it. Dream Theater is a wonderful band, and they seem to like perfoming demanding songs, and sometimes it feels that they concentrate only in composing and playing a difficult song, and I think it was a bit of the case here.
I wouldn’t say that this song was the clear winner here, however.
I chose to do Revolution Void: Total sensory deprivation
ReplyDeleteNow, this song isn't a song that can be understood, but instead it must be felt. It is an almagamation of different tunes and a mesh of irrational babble. This in turn, leaves it wide open for interpretation.
This of course then leads to the issue that the meaning behind the song, can be loosely attributed to whatever the interpreter desires, since it's meaning is alot more subjective than most songs. I could, per say, associate it to blueberry cheescake brownies.
However, the song does have an ethreal aura, and a pseudomystic theme to it, so that does give it a dream like trance. In that sense, I do agree that it could be roughly related to insomnia.
In the end, I did love the song. I had not heard most of the songs chosen this time, so most were nice suprises. I found it interesting how most of the songs reflected a bit of the chooser's personality, but let us not get into that :).
Sorry if my post is a bit breif, but I had done a more elaborate one but then the universe decided to punish me and delete it instead of post it. :( :( :(
I kind of wanted to do the review about my own song, because I wanted to explain it, but I guess I'll have to settle for Owl City's Fireflies now.
ReplyDeleteI simply love this song. The intro already gives it this really happy and bubbly feeling, and it continues through the whole song. It gives me the kind of feeling I get when I'm really tired or I've stayed up really late: that I have huge amounts of energy but I can't really focus on anything. This is also brought out in the second verse, in the lyrics.
I also love the way it gradually builds up towards the end and then suddenly quietens down again at the very end, and then finishes with this really quiet music box-type melody. It gives the impression of a bedtime song you'd sing to a little kid or something. The lyrics also give it this kind of dream-like feel (mainly because they are about dreaming :]).
All in all, I think this song was the best out of all of them. The lyrics and the melody worked really well together, and it really gave me a feeling of sleeplessness.
I really liked the other songs as well, most of them were really refreshing and there were a few surprises, and as I only knew about two songs out of the eight it was quite fun to see what each person would come up with.
