Friday 8th of January

Due to the lack of participants (only me and Aleksi were present), we switched the Bicycle Thief (Ladri Di Biciclette, 1948) to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998).

  1. Hi popmccs!
I wonder if you'd be interested in seeing classic films on a big screen, for free, all exploring the theme of youth. The City of Helsinki Cultural Office (Helsingin kulttuurikeskus's own translation) continues showing films for free, but entry requires enrolment by email. More info from me, as Kulttuurikeskus haven't updated their site.

  2. What I would say about this movie, is that it was a comedy criticizing the use of drugs (depicting the main characters as slightly paranoids). It portrayed psychedelic imagery, and bizarre events.

The behaviour of the characters was very weird, which fit the whole concept very well. The actors did a good job pretending to be high or messed up by other drugs.

I found this rather amusing. (And I was there watching the movie, almost all of it, it's been a long time, though).

  3. Trying to collect the last-minute CAS hours. :)

I just watched this movie again a week ago, and every time I enjoy it more than the last time.

So, the film is basicly following the trip (ooh what a choise of words) of a reporter and his attorney to Nevada to write an article about a motorcycle race. His attorney advices him to rent a convertible, and take cocaine, mescaline, weed, ether, acid, alcohol, amyls and everytihng else, and so the journey may start.

As the story continues, Raoul Duke narrates the story, sharing is own philosophies and opinions about the world surrounding him.

Genious. "She's doing her masters thesis on... well, Barbra Streisand. "

  4. Dudes, this was tripping awesome! Well, maybe not that nice after all when considering people killed because of drug usage. As Jere stated the guys used like all possible drugs invented. Inhaling lightbulb was as genious as it sounds. You can’t really compare this to Trainspotting, which at least on my opinion gives a much more realistic view on this drug problem. Hard to say did Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas give a negative or positive image to drug usage. It didn’t try to be a drug educational movie and you could see that. The one watching Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas needs to take the issue with humor even though joking with this serious issue might not be that sensible. Still and sorry for the ones that suffer from the case of drugs, this was one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
