I've understood that I'm supposed to comment in order to actually get the cas- so here goes. First of all, I thought this was an excellent movie (one of my all-time favorites). It is clear that Charlie Kaufman is one of the most artistic and talented writers of our time. What I love about this movie (as well as his other movies) is that though it is at times somewhat psychodelic in its twists, it's somehow very real. And I think this comes across through the characters. Jim Carrey's character, for example, is just an ordinary guy - extremely ordinary in fact. This is what makes the movie so charming. It's somehow so genuine. Not a crappy action film filled with random special effects but truly art - as the main objective of art is to depict life as it is.
So, this was another one of the artistic movies, which make no sense until you think (and still don't make any sense) until finally, in the end, the pieces fit together and you understand the symbolism of everything. Not the type of movies you'd like to watch just to to a break from life, but interesting and nice for a change. Overall, I liked it.
The thing that makes gives the movie an idea (and causes it to be so confusing) is the way the events are mixed up. It difficult to tell, until the end, what happened first, what is real and what is a dream. The director fills your mind with all these events and the emotions in them, what the characters are thinking and feeling at each point, and so before the ending, all the pieces are there, but the order and sense in them is missing. The way it comes together in the end makes it a experience in contrast to being just a movie. The way it still isn't completely cleared up makes you think about it afterwards and distinguishes it from just another movie. This is the basis that makes it special.
So the final verdict; was it a success or too confusing to work? Maybe both... not the type you'd like to watch just to to a break from life, but totally worth it. 100%.
I'm not really interrested in making a third analysis of the film, so i'll just right my opinions about it. please comment, it would be nice to have a discussion :)
Alright. To be honest, I was really scared to begin with, since the movie was written by the same guy as Synecdoche, New York (I didn’t like that movie at all). But I was wrong! This was one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time, and the ones who know me probably know that I’ve seen a few :P
Only one thing bothers me. If I had watched this movie at home or in the movies, I would have definitely cried. A lot. But I restrained myself since we were at school (and because of you guys), so it kind of makes me wonder. In other circumstances I probably (or for sure actually) would have reacted and interpreted the whole movie very differently.
A list of the things I loved: - It was different, and the director/authors have an awesome imagination - Clementine’s hair kept changing color (plus it helped to understand) - The fact that it was so weird - Jim Carrey wasn’t annoying like he usually is - I loved the colors, and the music fit perfectly
Well actually I can’t come up with a lot of negative things to say… Oh yes. The end. The very end was a bit useless. The movie could have just ended without Kirsten Dunst ever sending the tapes back. It just made it a bit too long, and since it ends happily anyway, I don’t think it would have hurt to let that part out.
It was a very emotional movie, and very different. As several people already have stated, it is not the kind of the movie that you just sit and watch, this had more or less a certain message to deliver.
Even though it introduced some fictional elements and bizarre events, I didn't find that annoying, in fact it fit the whole theme very well. It was interesting how such a relationship was depicted (Clementine was a rather...different individual, whereas Joel was the epitomy of ordinarity).
The idea of browsing through someones memories while erasing them was a creative thought indeed.
There was one thing that kept bothering me. The very ending, it was somehow not intact with the rest of the movie. I can't describe what I mean by this, but I think many people will agree with me.
Odd, I remembered that I had written a review about this movie...
The first time I saw this movie, I was apparently too young to understand it, because I thought it had been one of the worst movies I had seen. However, after hearing lots of compliments about the film, i decided to give it another shot.
I was surprised by how much my memory had distorted, I only remembered that there was some messing with the protagonist's memories. I don't know what to say about the movie, but I'll still try.
The film raises a lot of questions: Is it right to erase someone from your memories? If you erase your memories, does it change who you are?
The actors did an impressive job, and I believe that even the Jim Carrey -haters like his performance in this movie.
Yeah, usually I hate Jim Carrey’s guts. Seriously Ace Ventura, give me a break. That’s a complete load of… Sorry, back to business. I’m impressed, really impressed. How could Jim Carrey do such acting? He was good. Yes, that is odd. This wasn’t just happy, happy, joy, joy -it had a deeper meaning and for being such an emotional movie I was positively surprised how well Jim Carrey did his job. Weird and nice. I don’t really know what to say.
